Why are Teenagers Eager to Drink Alcohol and Do Drugs | John Adams

Let's face it, teenage is the most complicated phase of life. This time when we are going through so many mental challenges and physical changes. We are not sure who is, but we have idols and inspirations, which we are dying to follow. The curiosity of teenagers gets the best of them, as they are adolescence, which is why every 15 to 16 year old is way too eager to dive in.

Teens do not realize what comes after indulging in these forbidden fads. When they feel the excruciating hangover the next day, wake up in a strange place, or get arrested for DUI/DWI offense, it is then that they realize that alcohol/drug abuse is not fun and games. Here's why the average teen is tempted to try alcohol and drugs:

To Experiment

Teenage is all about trying and discovering oneself. Easy access to alcohol and drugs encourages youngsters to experiment. They observe drinking and smoking pot as common activities in society, which makes it look harmless and endearing. Most teens have more freedom than they can handle; boredom and lack of supervision incline them towards rebellious behavior. Teenagers rarely excel at making rational decisions, not because they are dumb, but due to a lack of sufficient knowledge and experience.

To Feel Good or Invincible

More than 60% of teenagers suffer from anxiety and depression due to morbid situations at home or in schools. Witnessing or being targeted in domestic violence can damage their mental and physical health. Similarly, being bullied at school or struggle with academics can be rather difficult to cope with. Some kids are just neglected and lonely, as they do not possess the confidence or social skills to make friends. Lack of attention from parents may add to their discomfort. Teens use alcohol and drugs as a way to deal with these problems; the temporary bliss of self-assurance it grants is addictive.

To Fit In

Peer pressure is a frequent cause of teenage alcohol and drug abuse. Every American high school movie or drama you see features a rich kid who hosts an unchaperoned party at his/her big mansion; the highlight of the party is drinking booze or getting high on illegal substances like weed and LSD. Anyone invited to this party gets the seal of approval and someone who refuses to indulge in debauchery becomes the resident loser. acceptance and elevation of socio status are very important factors in a teenager's life. When alcohol and drugs promise them these rewards, they will consume them blindly. There seems to be no harm when everyone who matters is already doing it.

To Feel Mature

Kids are always in hurry to grow up, which is why they are keen to mimic the adults around them. When teens observe parents and other grownups in their life openly drink or use other drugs, it is unsurprisingly intriguing. They perceive it as a means to have a taste of adulthood and feel powerful. Youngsters are under the illusion that drinking alcohol or smoking a cigar makes them look sophisticated and seasoned: in reality, they come across as irresponsible, stupid, and vulnerable
